Online animation helps pupils to gain an understanding of animal support systems - e.g. endoskeleton, exoskelton, hydrostatic skeleton. Science lesson also provides limited sample questions at the end of the topic. ANIMAL SUPPORT SYSTEMSExplains that all animals have a support system which gives their bodies shape and helps them to move.Explains that all animals need some support system to give them shape. Without a frame, the body would be a blob of jelly with no shape. Explains the skeleton that is found on the outside of the animal is called the exoskeleton. Explains that an exoskeleton, made from chitin, covers the body and protects the soft inside parts of the body. Explains that chitin does not allow the animal to grow, so it has to moult when it grows bigger. Explains a hydrostatic skeleton is made of muscles that are held up by a fluid in the body cavity. The muscles push against this fluid to help it move. Explains a skeleton found inside the body is called an endoskeleton. Explains the muscles and organs are attached to the outside and allow the animal to grow and help it move around. Useful for teachers of science/biology |

Science lesson also provides limited multiple choice sample questions at the end of the topic. ANIMALS AS CONSUMERSExplains that animals cannot make their own food like plants. They are consumers.Explains that Herbivores eat only plants. Herbivores that eat leaves, flowers and seeds are called browsers and those that eat grass are called grazers. Explains that animals that only eat meat are called carnivores. A predator hunts other animals for food. Explains that some animals are omnivores. This means they eat plants and other animals.
